Biography

Active as a soloist and as a member of various chamber ensembles and symphony orchestras, clarinetist Vasa Vučković regularly performs classical, contemporary and improvised music. He has performed in Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Slovenia and Serbia, and taken part in festivals such as European Clarinet Festival, KLANGPUREN NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL, International Review of Composers, Festival Ljubljana, NOMUS, BELEF, A-fest, Front Festival, BEMUS, SOMUS, Ruid al Sud, Walter Boyekens Festival, KoMA and BUNT Festival. Vasa appeared as a soloist with the Vojvodina Symphony Orchestra, MAKRIS Symphony Orchestra, Pančevo Chamber Orchestra and Clarinet Choir ensemble. He appeared as principal clarinetist of the Ljubljana International Orchestra, Vojvodina Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Academica, Orfelin Orchestra, and also performed as a member of the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, Serbian National Theatre Orchestra, Ensemble Studio 6, Ensemble Metamorphosis and The Construction Site Contemporary Music Ensemble.

He is the winner of the Anton Eberst International Competition in Novi Sad (2010) and laureate of the International Competition for Chamber Wind Ensembles in Pančevo (2011). He has also won the first prize at the International Woodwinds Competition in Požarevac (2004) and the second prize at the National Competition in Belgrade (2003). From 2006 until 2013 he performed throughout Serbia as a solo clarinetist with the Clarinet Choir, also featuring in several recordings.

Together with pianist Nataša Penezić he founded VERS LA FLAMME in 2012, a duo that is committed to performing modern and contemporary music. The duo won two 1st prizes in Italian competitions in 2014: “Citta di Treviso” and “Luiggi Zanuccoli” in the contemporary music and chamber music categories respectively. Successful performances secured concerts and funding for their first CD release featuring the music of Joseph Horovitz, Meyer Kupferman, Jonas Forssell and Jasmina Mirtušić Đerić.

He is a member of a recently founded arts platform, SYNC Center Novi Sad, an organization that promotes ideas of syncretism in arts and is based around the SYNC Ensemble. In 2014 SYNC had its premiere supported by the Ministry of Culture and Information of the Republic of Serbia and has since developed numerous projects focused on modern music and the development of local artistic production. Vasa has made live recordings for national radio and television, appearing in shows that promote classical music. Committed to performing contemporary music, he has had a number of commissions, including pieces for clarinet solo, chamber ensembles and orchestras. He collaborates regularly with young up-and-coming composers. On the first Serbian contemporary music competition ReConstruction (2017) Vasa won two 1st prizes, in solo performance and chamber music category.

Vasa Vučković studied clarinet with professor Nikola Srdić at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad. He has attended master classes in his country and abroad under the tutelage of eminent professors such as: François Benda, Michael Arrignon, Béla Kovács, Wenzel Fuchs, Mate Bekavac, Paolo Beltramini, Calogero Palermo, Juan Ferrer, Seiki Shinohe, Masaharu Yamamoto, Valdemar Rodriguez, Tadej Kenig,  Zsolt Szatmári, Dario Zingales… He is currently studying doctoral programme at the chamber music department of the Music Faculty in Belgrade with Dejan Subotić and Igor Lazić.

Vasa received the award “Young Performer of the Year 2016”,  assigned by classical music magazine “Muzika Klasika”.
